If you’ve been keeping up with the news, and especially the natural products and health sectors, you’ve probably heard the recent scandal regarding herbal supplements not being what they claim.

An investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s office into store-brand herbal supplements from retail giants GNC, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart came up with some disappointing conclusions. As Dr. Hulda Clark’s birthday approaches, we at Self Health Resource Center find ourselves fondly remembering the great caretaker who gave so much to the world. Dr. Hulda Clark, my mentor and my inspiration, was an internationally renowned research scientist and author of several best-selling books dealing with herbal cleanses. Dr. Clark began her studies in biology at the University of Saskatchewan where she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, and a Master of Arts degree in biology with high honors. She studied cellular biology and radioactivity among other subjects, and received her doctorate degree in physiology in 1958.

Extend the Life of Your Supplements!

Recently many manufacturers of herbal products, such as Dr. Clark Store, have shifted from printing “Expiration Date” or “Use By” dates on products to printing “Manufacture Date.” Consequently, practitioners, consumers, and stores are noticing this change and wondering about its implications for products’ shelf life. What brought about this change in the industry standard and what does it mean for consumers?

People may assume that “Expiration Date” is a required feature for product packaging intended to protect the consumer against dated product. However, in the eyes of the FDA, “Expiration Dates” are all too often used to benefit an industry at the expense of the consumer. Many pharmaceutical companies place a short “Expiration Date” on products that have a long, stable, shelf life simply to encourage product turnover. Understandably, the FDA does not like to see products that are labeled with an “Expiration Date” unless there is scientific data to support that the product is good up to a stated date and that it degrades beyond that date.
